Damping Behavior of Pneumatic Cylinders Optimized
Standardized VDMA and ISO pneumatic cylinders with pneumatic end-of-stroke damping generally come with a cylinder cover structure that is relatively difficult to manufacture and comprises between 2 and 3 seals. Additional damping washers are often used as well. Depending on the version being used, the number of components and the size of the area needed for them can be reduced by using Damp and Seal, a seal that was recently developed by Simrit and for which a patent application has been filed. Damp & Seal damps the piston thrust, statically seals the cylinder cover, and dynamically seals the inner diameter of the damping pin that is connected to the piston.
Damp & Seal features a buffer that faces the pressure chamber and damps the mechanical thrust of the piston at the end of the stroke, thereby reducing both acoustic emissions and impact loads in the cylinder. The disc-shaped design of Damp & Seal really simplifies the cover, allowing for a smooth and flush finish on the front face.
As a result of a number of axially arranged bore holes and a ring channel between the front face of the cover and the seal, Damp & Seal also maintains contact between the end of stroke damping throttle and the cylinder chamber. The special shape of the seal means that it can be installed, no matter what the position. Rapid ventilation of the cylinder chamber at the start of piston movement is ensured by the slight raising of the disc-shaped seal; at the same time, air flows through the axial bore holes.

Simrit’s patented Damp & Seal connects with the front face of the cylinder cover on the pressure side. In pneumatic cylinders, it statically seals the cylinder barrel, dynamically seals the damping pin, and has a buffer that faces in the direction of the pressure chamber that damps the mechanical impact of the piston at the end of the stroke.
