Mechanical Face Seals from Goetze Specially Cast to Accomodate the Heaviest Loads

Goetze Mechanical Face SealsFederal-Mogul have reached another milestone with the development of a new material named Coronit for mechanical face seals from GOETZE™. The material is designed to help modern construction and mining vehicles that use GOETZE mechanical face seals operate in a more energy efficient manner. Coronit is eco-friendly and can offer cost savings through its longer life.

Excavators, mining trucks and tunneling machines face intense tribological loads due to the working environment characterized by dust, sand, mud and rock. The bearings of rollers, carriers, idlers and other drivetrain applications, the hubs of wheel drives and/or axles must be protected from dirt and debris. In case of a failure, significant cost is incurred for repair and downtime.

Standard seals are often not robust enough to withstand such loads and conditions. For decades, mechanical face seals from GOETZE have been used under such harsh conditions. The seals are developed at Federal-Mogul's powertrain energy manufacturing facility. GOETZE products are of high quality due to modern testing standards and 100% visual inspection. They are tailored to particular applications through adaptations to material, elastomer composition and design. Starting with an outer diameter of 50mm, the seals are available up to 1,425mm. The world’s largest cast mechanical face seals are made by GOETZE and are used in mining trucks, excavators and other large machines.

Coronit is a special cast iron with a ledeburite structure and free graphites. By using free graphites, the material has a particularly high thermal conductivity. It also has a hardness of 47-57 HRC, and therefore shows excellent resistance against seizure and scoring, as well as against wear.

GOETZE-cast materials are already superior to those made with bearing steel 100CR6, exhibiting;

  • Better wear and corrosion resistance
  • Longer life
  • Higher achievable rotational speed
  • Improved oil retention, behavior due to casting process

With innovation, a wide variety of products and brand quality, as well as material competence, a focus on high levels of service and a global presence, GOETZE has reached a leading position in the market for cast mechanical face seals.
