Central Tyre Inflation (CTI)
 FTL Technology designs and manufactures Sealing and Engineered Solutions for many industry sectors, including a long standing capability with
Military Vehicle applications. Whilst traditionally this centred on tracked vehicle systems, FTL Technology recognised an opportunity to supply
the wheeled vehicle market with its unique CTI sealing system. CTI systems allow tyre pressures to be adjusted from within the cab of a moving
vehicle.
Besides the significant increase in mobility, the overall benefits to the vehicle and operator(s) of having this capability are significant:
- Reduced crew fatigue
- Increase vehicle mobility
- lower through life operating costs
- Reduced stress on drivetrain
- Increased tyre life/fewer punctures
The FRES utility vehicle programme in conjunction with the NDI industry presentations, were seen as a great opportunity to introduce this capability to a wider
audience. Although the programme was subsequently withdrawn, the whole process gave FTL Technology exposure to new potential customers and markets.
This has resulted in seals being specified on vehicles destined for non UK markets, with future contracts ‘in the pipeline’. Combined with other applications,
seals are now being successfully used on several UK vehicles, as well as vehicle programmes in India, Singapore, Korea, Germany, USA, Italy and Turkey.
In addition to the sealing system, FTL Technology also supplies the control system required for operation within a modern CTI environment. Operating with
J1939 CAN Bus protocol, the system can be integrated with the existing vehicle electronic architecture. This allows control of all tyre inflation/deflation
function and can respond to changes in vehicle load, speed and mission requirements. Several UK and overseas vehicle programmes have been successfully
commissioned by FTL Technology, with the prospect of significant future applications and new programmes, arising as a result.
