Multi Passage Rotary Joints for Several Media from Maier Heidenheim, Germany

Traditional rotary joints with single or double passage always have got same characteristics and are only suitable for one medium. With these joints only a destined flow can be operated according their size and cross sections.

Multi passage rotary joints are designed according a different logic. Often different cross sections are requested either for different flow and/or pressure. Deviating from the job for a traditional rotary joint several different media has to be fed through, regularly with different pressure and temperatures. A careful choice of suitable seal elements and counter seals is essential.

The demand for individual configurations for different media requires regularly customized solutions. Design of multi passage rotary joints can be done with axial inlets at the housing and radial outlets at the rotor, with through shaft mounting, with drain holes between each channel. Mainly for combination of different media it is strongly recommended to secure the passages by drain holes.

Furthermore hollow shaft solutions are possible, means rotary joints mounted on a shaft and to feed the flow only through the housing. Multi passage joints from Maier can be supplied in stainless steel. For less complex jobs often aluminium or brass housings are sufficient. Sometimes it is recommended to use for the individual inlets for each passage a separate rotary joint called “Combi-Joint”. Also the rotary joint can be combined with an electric slip ring, the cable is going through a central bore in the multi passage joint. Power electricity can be supplied as well as signals. The most common media are hydraulic oil, water, compressed air, gas and chemicals. Design experience is also available for vacuum 10-2 mbar, in diameter up to 500 mm. Multi passage joints are used at revolving platforms for tools, for machine tools, at food processing equipment, filling machines, blow molding machines, robotics, vacuum coating, etc. Maier’s mission is “Safe transfer of fluids”.
